Shagbark Hickory Leaves by Christina Rollo. Shagbark Hickory also known as Upland Hickory is a medium sized tree with a single straight trunk and a tall, narrow irregular shaped crown. The bark is gray with long smooth vertical strips curling at each end giving it a shaggy appearance. The shagbark hickory can reach height of 40 to 60 feet tall and they have a life span of 150 - 200 years. Fruit is a green nut which turns brown at maturity. Nuts are sweet and edible.
