Description
Northern Cardinal by Christina Rollo. The Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), is a medium sized songbird. It has a distinctive crest on the head and a mask on the face which is black in the male and gray in the female. Males are vibrant red, females are a dull reddish-brown color. The male behaves territorially, marking out his territory with song. During courtship, the male feeds seeds to the female.
The Northern Cardinal is the state bird, of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia in the US.
