Description
Monarch Caterpillars by Christina Rollo. A macro photograph showing detail of a pair of Monarch Caterpillars (Danaus plexippus) feeding on a milkweed plant after a rain shower. Monarchs are foul-tasting and poisonous to predators due to the presence of cardenolide aglycones in their bodies, which the caterpillars ingest as they feed on milkweed. Two Rivers Photography competition winner.

Thank you Paula! These monarch caterpillars were found in the wild, but I have also enjoyed raising them in captivity. Their transformation to butterfly is truly a miracle of nature!
