Hawthorn by Christina Rollo. Continuing my native tree series. Hawthorn is one of my favorites, despite its sharp thorns. When these trees bloom in spring they are beautiful!

Hawthorns provide food and shelter for many species of birds and mammals. The flowers are important for many nectar feeding insects. Hawthorns are also used as food plants by the larvae of a large number of Lepidoptera species. They are important for wildlife in winter, especially thrushes and waxwings; these birds eat the haws and disperse the seeds.
