Eastern Newt Red Eft stage by Christina Rollo. The Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens), or Red Spotted Newt is a common salamander of eastern North America. Eastern Newts have three stages of life, the aquatic tadpole stage, the Red Eft or terrestrial juvenile stage, like the one pictured here, and the aquatic adult stage. The Red Eft is bright orange red in color, with dark red spots outlined in black.
