Cecropia Moth Emerged by Christina Rollo. Close-up macro photograph showing fine details of a Cecropia Moth (Hyalophora cecropia) shortly after emerging from it's silk cocoon. The Cecropia Moth is a member of the Saturniidae family, or giant silk moths and is North America's largest native moth. This one had a wingspan measuring 6-3/4". You don't normally see them in the wild because they are active at night and the larvae feed high in the tree tops. Adult moths emerge only to breed. They have no mouth parts or digestive system, and only live for about 2 weeks.
