Black Walnut by Christina Rollo. The Black Walnut tree is one of six species of walnut native to North America valued for its wood. It's an important food source for wildlife. The Black Walnut grows to 50 - 75 feet with a life span of 150 - 175 years. Leaves are compound, alternately attached with pointed tips, fruit is fleshy green in clusters with green husk that surrounds a dark nut which matures in autumn. The nuts are sweet and edible.
