Barred Owlet by Christina Rollo. The Barred Owl's nest is often found in a tree cavity, excavated by pileated woodpeckers. They may also take over an old nests made by hawks, crows, or squirrels. The Barred Owl is a permanent resident, but may wander after the nesting season. If a nesting site has been suitable in the past it is possible they will reuse it. In the Northeast US, 2-4 eggs are laid in mid-April. Eggs are brooded by the female and hatch about 4 weeks later. Young owls fledge four to five weeks after hatching.
