Barred Owl by Christina Rollo. This barred owl is perched on a branch, looking over its shoulder with an intense gaze. Its feathers are intricately patterned in shades of brown and white, blending well with the surrounding woodland environment. This photograph is from my first sighting of a Barred Owl (Strix varia) in the wild. I was surprised that it didn't seem to be upset by my presence, and allowed me to approach it closely. The Barred Owl is a large owl native to North America. It's best known as the Hoot Owl because of its call. Their call is a series of hoots ending in oo-aw.
