The "Grafted In" symbol is very old and interesting. First to Second century artifacts discovered in a cave near King David's tomb on Mount Zion in the 1960s bear this symbol. Some experts believe that it was an identifying mark of the early Jewish believers in Yeshua (Jesus) as a symbol that tied together their faith traditions and their faith in the Messianic community of that time. The Menorah at the top represents the Torah, the fulfillment of the promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and to the calling of the people of Israel. According to the New Testament, Yeshua came to fulfill the law. He said he was the Light of the World. The Star of David represents the promise that a future King from the House of David would sit on David's throne. Psalm 2 says God would install "my King on Zion", the Son of God whose Kingdom would extend to the ends of the earth. And the symbol of the fish has a rich history of identification with Messianic and gentile believers in Yeshua. It was a common symbol because the Greek word for fish (ICHTHYS) was used as an acronym for "Yeshua, Son of God, Savior" in Hebrew. Yeshua means salvation. This beautiful ancient symbol came to be called the "Grafted In" symbol for gentile believers in Yeshua. Paul wrote of being "grafted in Romans 11:17-18, "you have been grafted into the Jewish Root through faith in Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel, from the House of David, the Fulfiller of the Torah promises and the King in the line of David. Paul wrote that the grafted in branches (gentile believers) are supported by the roots of the olive tree (Israel). Thus this painting incorporates roots from the olive tree menorah wrapping around the House of David first and reaching to the gentile believers in the Jewish Messiah, Yeshua (Jesus.) A beautiful symbol.
